Optical Fiber cable

It is also called a Fiber optics cable. It is the fastest transmission medium at present. It is popularly used for long-distance communication and telecommunication networks. It transmits data in the form of light signal. It contains multiple small hair-like fibers made of glass or plastic. Data is transmitted through the fiber as a light signal using total internal reflection of light. It requires an ST connector.

Advantages of using optical fiber cable

  • It is the fastest transmission medium at present.
  • It can transmit large volumes of data at the same time.
  • It provides error-free transmission.

Disadvantages of using optical fiber cable

  • It is expensive.
  • It is difficult to install and bend.

1. Differentiate between bounded and unbounded transmission media.

Bounded media

Unbounded media

It is commonly called wired media or guided media.

It is commonly called wireless media or unguided media.

The transmission of data happens in the form of electrical or optical signals.

It transmits data in the form of electromagnetic signals (radio signals)

It transmits data through a specific path (cable).

It transmits data through the air.

Transmission speed is generally faster.

Transmission speed is generally slower.

It provides better security during transmission.

The security is weak during transmission.

It has a low effect on human health as compared to unguided media.

It has much more effect on human health as compared to guided media.

It is normally cheaper.

It is normally expensive.

Example: Twisted pair cable, coaxial cable

Example: Terrestrial microwave, Satellite communication

2. Differentiate between peer-to-peer and client/server networks.

Peer-to-Peer network

Client-Server network

It is the simple connection of similar types of computers called peers.

This type of network contains two types of computers the client and the server.

It doesn't contain any dedicated server or client. Each computer can work as both a client and server in different instances.

It contains a dedicated server and clients. A server is a special computer that provides services to the client and the client receives services from the server.

It is appropriate for small organizations with a limited number of computers.

It is appropriate for large organizations with large numbers of computers.

Peer-to-peer networks are easier and cheaper to establish and manage.

It is complex and expensive to manage.

Difficult to manage high security without a dedicated server.

Higher security can be maintained through the server.

Administration of the network and computer will be difficult without a dedicated server.

The administration of the network and computer will be easier through the server.

Highly skilled manpower is not required to operate.

Skilled manpower is required to operate.

3. Differentiate between LAN and WAN.

LAN

WAN

It is limited only to a small geographical area.

It can be expanded to a large geographical area.

A smaller number of computers can be connected.

A larger number of computers are connected.

It is faster

It is slower

It is simple

It is complex

It requires networking devices like Hub, Switch, NIC, etc.

It requires networking devices like Routers, Gateways, etc.

It is cheaper to establish than WAN.

It is more expensive than LAN.

It is usually owned by a single organization.

It is usually owned by multiple organizations.

4. Differentiate between the internet and intranet.

Internet

Intranet

It is a public network, so it is not owned by a particular organization.

It is a private network, so it is owned by a particular organization or group of organizations.

It is a public network that connects a large number of computers worldwide.

It is the private network that connects the computers of an organization or group organization.

It contains a large number of  computers.

It connects a limited number of computers and users.

It can be used by any user.

It can be used only by the permitted users such as employees, or customers of the organization.

It contains data and information targeted at all users.

It contains data information targeted only to the users of the organization.

The security is usually low.

The security is usually higher.

Data transmission will be slower due to the large number of users.

Data transmission will be faster due to the limited number of users.

5. Differentiate between guided and unguided networking media.

Networking media is a path through which data and information are transmitted from one computer to another in a network. It refers to wire, cable, or wireless medium.

Networking mediums can be
  • Guided media (also called wired media)
  • Unguided media (also called as wireless media)

Guided Media

Unguided Media

It is commonly called wired media.

It is commonly called wireless media.

It transmits data in the form of electromagnetic signals (radio signals)

It transmits data in the form of electrical or optical signals.

It transmits data through a specific path (cable).

It transmits data through the air

Transmission speed is generally faster.

Transmission speed is generally slower.

It provides better security during transmission.

The security is weak during transmission.

It has a low effect on human health as compared to unguided media.

It has more effect on human health as compared to guided media.

It is normally cheaper.

It is normally expensive.
